Selection of participants
Based on the applications received for active participation selected candidates will be invited to the preliminary audition. Applicants will receive the results of this selection by email by August 10, 2024. The audition will take place on the first day of the Summer School (Sunday, September 1st 2024) at 6 pm. Among the pre-conducting candidates the conductors for active participation will then be admitted. Candidates who are not selected will have the opportunity to continue attending the Conducting Academy as passive participants.

Active participation
For the active participants selected by the preconference there will be a participation fee of 400 Euro (no meals and no accommodation will be provided). Part of the participation fees (€100) must be paid at the latest by August 15, 2024 after being invited to participate. The rest of the fees (€300) are to be paid on site.
Passive participation
For passive participants, a fee of 100 euros will be charged after confirmation of participation (meals or accomodation are not provided). The fee must be paid by August 15, 2024 at the latest.

From 1 to 6 September 2024, the Saar University of Music is organizing the “HfM Saar Summer School” for the seventh time with a conducting academy under the direction of Prof. Georg Grün.
The conducting academy primarily deals with questions of interpretation, choral sound, intonation and their rehearsal and conducting implementation in a professional context. Particular attention is paid to the expression of the conduction through striking technique and the individual “conducting language” of the participants. This is realized by individual conducting lessons with Prof. Grün, by video coaching with international guests and by passive participation in the choir rehearsals as well as by individually conducting the KammerChor Saarbrücken.
Part of the lessons and rehearsals within this year’s Summer School will be offered via Internet video transmission to students from other German and foreign universities of music and other interested parties. Seminars, lectures and rehearsals by external lecturers from abroad are also made available for the participants of the summer school.

Die Dirigierakademie richtet sich an Studierende im Fach Chorleitung sowie Kirchenmusiker*innen und junge Nachwuchsdirigent*innen, die sich für ein Weiterbildungsstudium Chordirigat interessieren. Sie beschäftigt sich vorrangig mit Fragen der Interpretation, Chorklang, Intonation sowie deren proben- und dirigiertechnischer Umsetzung im professionellen Kontext. Ein besonderer Augenmerk liegt dabei auf dem Ausdruck des Dirigats durch Schlagtechnik und der individuellen „Dirigiersprache“ der Teilnehmer(innen). Dies erfolgt durch individuellen Dirigierunterricht bei Prof. Grün, durch Coaching per Video-Übertragung mit internationalen Gästen und durch die passive Teilnahme an den Chorproben sowie dem eigenen Dirigieren des Akademieensembles.
Die Summer School kooperiert mit einem professionellen Videotechnik-Team, das nicht nur für die Videoübertragung des didaktischen Angebots sorgt, sondern auch die Erstellung hochwertiger Videos ermöglicht. Diese professionellen Aufnahmen stehen den Teilnehmer*innen nicht nur für private, sondern auch für berufliche Zwecke zur Verfügung.
Arbeitsplan

- täglich bis zu drei Stunden aktive Arbeit mit dem KammerChor Saarbrücken (nur für aktive Teilnehmer)

*Die aktiven Teilnehmer willigen ein, beim Abschlusskonzert zu dirigieren, falls sie vom musikalischen Leiter dafür ausgewählt werden. Ein Anspruch auf ein Dirigat besteht nicht.

Web-Masterclasses und Online-Coaching
Ein Teil des Unterrichts und der Proben innerhalb der Summer School 2024 werden via Internet-Videoübertragung für Studierende anderer deutscher und ausländischer Musikhochschulen sowie Interessenten kostenlos angeboten. Ebenso werden Seminare, Vorlesungen und Coaching externer Dozenten*innen aus dem Ausland zur Verfügung gestellt.
Das Akademieensemble
Eines der Ziele ist die Erarbeitung anspruchsvoller Chormusik unter professionellen Bedingungen. Das Akademieensemble, welches für die Kandidat*innen zur Verfügung steht, ist mit Sänger*innen des KammerChors Saarbrücken und professionellen Sänger*innen aus Rundfunkchören, renommierten Vokalensembles oder der professionellen Chorszene in jeder Stimmgruppe besetzt. Dieses Jahr wird die komplette Besetzung des renommierten Calmus Ensembles in dem Akademieensemble mitsingen und die Stimmführung in den Stimmregistern übernehmen.

Georg Grün darf sich international zu den gefragten Chordirigenten und Chorklangspezialisten zählen. Er gründete 1990 den KammerChor Saarbrücken und ist dessen künstlerischer Leiter bis heute. Mit diesem Ensemble gewann er wichtige internationale und nationale Chorwettbewerbe, er konzertiert auf vielen renommierten Musikfestivals und produziert regelmäßig CDs beim Carus-Verlag und bei Rondeau. Von 2000 bis 2012 hatte Georg Grün eine Professur für Chorleitung an der Musikhochschule Mannheim inne, mit deren neu gegründetem Kammerchor er ebenfalls zahlreiche internationale Preise gewann. 2012 wechselte Georg Grün als Professor an die Hochschule für Musik Saar und übernahm 2013 die Leitung der Ev. Chorgemeinschaft an der Saar. Als Gastdirigent, Juror und Dozent internationaler Meisterklassen für Chorleitung ist Georg Grün im In- und Ausland unterwegs. Er ist seit 2010 Mentor des Dirigentenforums des Deutschen Musikrats und seit 2015 Jury-Vorsitzender des renommierten Int. Kammerchorwettbewerbs Marktoberdorf. Konzerte, Jurortätigkeiten, Meisterkurse und Gastdirigate führen ihn 2016 u. a. nach Italien, Frankreich, Irland, Spanien und Polen.

Mauro Barbierato wurde 1984 in Padova (Italien) geboren und hat dort nach der Schulausbildung zunächst Orgel und Orgel-Komposition bei Prof. L. Medici Turrini am Conservatorio „C. Pollini” studiert, wo er mit Diplom abschloss. Seine musikalische Laufbahn führte ihn danach ans Conservatorio „G. Verdi" nach Mailand, wo er die Fächer Chordirigat, musikalische Paläografie (bei Prof. G. Acciai) und Basso Continuo (bei Prof. C. Farina) studierte. An der Musikhochschule Mannheim schloss er das Bachelor-Studium sowohl mit künstlerischem als auch mit pädagogischem Schwerpunkt ab. Sein Master-Dirigierstudium und das Aufbaustudium „Dirigieren-Konzertexamen” schloss er anschließend an der Hochschule für Musik Saar bei Prof. G.Grün ab. An der Opernschule der Musikhochschule Mannheim arbeitete er als musikalischer Assistent von Prof. Cosima Osthoff sowie als Korrepetitor. Im April 2012 leitete er die Oper "Echt?" beim Schnawwl Theater Mannheim und im Nationaltheater Mannheim in der Spielzeit 2014-15 die Oper “Sturm”. Derzeit ist er Dirigent des Kinderchores des Saarländischen Staatstheaters, des LandesJugendChors Saar und des Robert-Schuman-Chors. An der Hochschule für Musik Saar unterrichtet er aktuell Chorleitung und das Fach “Praxisbezogenes Stimmtraining Italienisch" als Lehrkraft für besondere Aufgaben. Seit 2020 ist er zudem Dozent für Chorleitung an der Hochschule für Musik Mainz.

Dr. Coreen Duffy ist seit sechs Jahren Leiterin der Choraktivitäten an der University of Montana School of Music, wo sie den Kammerchor und den Universitätschor leitet, Dirigieren und Chormethoden unterrichtet und Lehramtsstudenten betreut. Unter ihrer Leitung trat der UM-Kammerchor beim Internationalen Kammerchorwettbewerb in Marktoberdorf auf und diente als Meisterklassenchor für den Internationalen Dirigentenwettbewerb in Deutschland (2022). Der Chor trat auch beim 75. Jubiläums-Musikfestival der Hochschule für Musik Saar (2022), in der Cadogan Hall und der Southwark Cathedral in London (2022), bei der Northwest Conference of the ACDA (2022) und beim Montana International Choral Festival (2023, 2019) auf. Coreen Duffy ist außerdem künstlerischer Leiter des UM-Missoula Community Chorus, eines generationenübergreifenden Ensembles, das nicht an einem Vorsingen teilnimmt und in dem Schüler von der 8. bis zur 80. Als Spezialist für jüdische Chormusik hat Duffy Vorträge zu diesem Thema auf nationalen und regionalen ACDA-Konferenzen sowie auf der NCCO, der National Association for Music Education, der College Music Society und der internationalen Konferenz des European Center for Jewish Music in Deutschland gehalten. Als aktive Klinikerin und Komponistin sind ihre Werke bei Walton Music, ECS, Pavane Publishing und Hinshaw Music erschienen.
The Conducting Academy is aimed at students in choral conducting as well as church musicians and young up-and-coming conductors who are interested in continuing education in choral conducting. The Academy primarily deals with questions of interpretation, choral sound, intonation and their rehearsal and conducting implementation in a professional context. Particular attention is paid to the expression of the conduction through striking technique and the individual “conducting language” of the participants. This takes place by individual conducting lessons by Prof. Grün, by video coaching with international guests, by passive participation in the choir rehearsals and by conducting the academy ensemble.
The Summer School cooperates with a professional video technology team that not only ensures the video transmission of the didactic offering, but also enables the creation of high-quality videos. These professional recordings are available to participants not only for private but also for professional purposes.

The academy ensemble
One of the goals is to develop sophisticated choral music under professional conditions. The academy ensemble, which is available to the candidates, is made up of singers from the KammerChor Saarbrücken and professional singers from radio choirs, renowned vocal ensembles or the professional choir scene in each vocal group. This year, the entire cast of the renowned Calmus Ensemble will sing in the academy ensemble and take over the lead vocals in the vocal register.

Georg Grün ranks among the most sought-after choral conductors and choral sound specialists in the world. In 1990, he founded the KammerChor Saarbrücken and remains its artistic director today. With the ensemble he has won major international and national choir competitions, has performed at many renowned music festivals and has regularly produced CDs for Carus-Verlag and Rondeau. Between 2000 and 2012 Georg Grün was professor of choral conducting at the Musikhochschule Mannheim, with whose newly-formed Chamber Choir he also won numerous international prizes. In 2012, Georg Grün was appointed professor at the HfM University of Music Saar, and in 2013 took on the role of conductor of the Ev. Chorgemeinschaft an der Saar. Georg Grün travels extensively both in Germany and abroad as a guest conductor, adjudicator and teacher of international master classes in choral conducting. Since 2010, he has been a mentor of the Conductors' Forum of the German Music Council and since 2015, chairman of the jury at the renowned International Chamber Choir Competition Marktoberdorf. In 2016 concerts, adjudicator work, master classes and guest conducting engagements will take him, among other places, to Italy, France, Ireland, Spain and Poland.

Mauro Barbierato was born in Padova (Italy) in 1984. After his school education he studied organ and organ composition with Prof. L. Medici Turrini at the Conservatorio "C. Pollini", where he graduated with the diploma. His musical career then led him to the Conservatorio "G. Verdi" in Milan, where he studied choral conducting, musical paleography (with Prof. G. Acciai) and basso continuo (with Prof. C. Farina). At the Mannheim University of Music he completed his Bachelor's degree with both artistic and pedagogical specialization. After that he completed his studies with a master's degree and postgraduate studies in choir conducting at the University of Music in Saarbrücken with Prof. G.Grün. At the Opera School of the Mannheim University of Music he worked as musical assistant for Prof. Cosima Osthoff and as a répétiteur. In April 2012, he conducted the opera "Echt?" at the Schnawwl Theater Mannheim and in the season 2014-15 the opera "Sturm" at the National Theater Mannheim. He is currently conductor of the Children's Choir of the Saarländischer Staatstheater, of the youth choir LandesJugendChor Saar and of the cross-country choir Choeur Robert Schuman. At the University of Music in Saarbrücken he is Italian language coach for the singers since 2013 and lecturer for choral conducting since 2020. Since 2020 he is also lecturer for choral conducting at the HochsUniversity of Music in Mainz.

Duffy has served as director of choral activities at the University of Montana School of Music for the past six years where she conducts the Chamber Chorale and University Choir, teaches conducting and choral methods, and supervises student teachers. Under her direction, the UM Chamber Chorale performed at the Marktoberdorf International Chamber Choir Competition and served as the master class choir for the International Conducting Competition, Germany (2022). The chorale also performed at the 75th Anniversary Festival of Music at the Hochschule für Musik Saar, Germany (2022), at Cadogan Hall and Southwark Cathedral in London (2022), at the Northwest Conference of the ACDA (2022) and at the Montana International Choral Festival (2023, 2019). Duffy further serves as artistic director for the UM-Missoula Community Chorus—a multi-generational, non-auditioned ensemble that includes 8th-graders through 80-somethings. And as a specialist in Jewish choral music, Duffy has presented sessions on the subject at national and regional ACDA conferences, as well as the NCCO, the National Association for Music Education, the College Music Society and the international conference of the European Center for Jewish Music, Germany. Additionally, as an active clinician and composer, her works are published by Walton Music, ECS, Pavane Publishing and Hinshaw Music.
